Working in Tax as a Graduate

The tax landscape is dynamic and fast-evolving, as tax laws are continually changing. As a graduate on a tax graduate scheme, you will gain in-depth knowledge to help companies, large and small to understand their taxes and to make informed decisions.

On a tax graduate scheme, you will gain hands-on experience, whilst working towards attaining a professional qualification.

1. PwC

PwC has a number of specialist tax teams. Each team. specialises in a specific area. Some examples of the teams you could join include

  • Corporate tax – where you will help companies to manage their tax risk, in line with complex legislation.
  • Indirect tax – as part of the indirect tax team, you can get involved with advising clients on the VAT implications of their activities in the UK.

As a tax graduate at PwC you will work towards the ACA CTA joint qualification.

The minimum academic requirement for most tax programmes is a 2:1 degree in any subject.

2. HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC)

HMRC is the UK’s tax and customs authority. The collected taxes are used to pay for the country’s public services, such as schools, hospitals and infrastructure.

The HMRC offer a Tax Specialist Programme (TSP), designed to help you become a generalist tax specialist.

If you are enthusiastic about tackling complex problems, dealing with people, analysing information and negotiation, the tax programme at HMRC may be for you.

On successful completion of the three-year tax programme, you will be promoted to a Grade 7 post as a senior tax professional.

To be eligible for this programme, you must have a. 2:2 degree or higher.

3. KPMG

KPMG offers its clients advice to help them to manage their tax issues, as digital transforms videos.

At KPMG on the tax graduate scheme you will study for the ICAEW CFAB (or Scotland equivalent), ATT and CTA.

4. EY

EY. helps organisations, from start-ups to multinationals to manage their tax

On a tax graduate programme at EY you will get the opportunity to work across various specialist tax teams in areas such as tax reporting, compliance and planning.

BDO is one of the UK’s largest accountancy and business advisory firms.

There are a number of corporate and specialist tax teams at Grant Thornton. You’ll learn how to interpret complex legislation, deliver a variety of solutions and provide clients with advice and recommendations.

RSM

At Crowe, graduates are offered a three-year training programme. Grads work both individually and collaboratively to deliver audit, accounting and advisory services to clients.

Alongside gaining practical experience, you will study to obtain the ACA qualification provided by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW).

Once qualified, you can progress your career by specialising in an area of tax.
