Graduate schemes are a fantastic pathway for university leavers to transition into the professional world. However, understanding the requirements for these schemes is vital for any graduate looking to apply. So without further ado, here are the most common requirements. 

Academic Qualifications

1. Degree Level:

The most fundamental requirement for most graduate schemes is a bachelor’s degree. Generally, employers look for candidates who have achieved a 2:1 or higher. However, some schemes are open to 2:2 degrees, especially if you can demonstrate strong skills or relevant experience. 

What if you achieved lower than a 2:2 in your degree? In recent years, many companies have dropped their degree requirement, so if you did not get a 1st, 2:1 or 2:2, look out for companies that do not have a degree level requirement. Some companies accept a Master’s degree in lieu of a 2:1 degree, but do your research properly. Oftentimes, companies without degree classification requirements will want to see evidence of excelling in other areas and key skills that enable you to stand out. 

Where you obtained your degree and when you attained it should not influence decisions made by companies. 

2. Subject Relevance:

Most degree subjects are non-vocational. Therefore, most schemes are open to any degree discipline.

Vocational careers such as Nursing, Pharmacy and Midwifery will of course require a degree in those areas. 

STEM-related graduate schemes such as software engineering or Data Analytics may ask for a degree-related degree such as science, technology, engineering or maths. 

Graduate schemes in Accounting or Law do not require degrees in these subjects and graduate employers are interested in applicants with diverse academic backgrounds. 

A smaller number of graduate schemes will ask for specific degree subjects at undergraduate level and sometimes (but not often) will ask for a specific Master’s degree for example some graduate jobs in Economics and Economic consulting. However, before embarking on a Master’s degree programme, check the entry requirements at the companies that you are interested in. 

Work Experience and Skills

1. Internships and Placements:

Having relevant work experience, like internships or industrial placements, can significantly boost your application. They demonstrate your practical understanding of the work environment and relevant skills.

2. Transferable Skills:

Graduate recruiters look for key employability skills such as teamwork, communication, problem-solving, and leadership.

Participation in work experience, extracurricular activities, volunteering, or part-time jobs can be excellent ways to demonstrate these skills on your CV and in interviews. 

Personal Attributes

1. Motivation and Commitment:

Employers seek graduates who are enthusiastic about their field and committed to their career development. Showing a genuine interest in the industry and the company can set you apart.

2. Adaptability and Resilience:

The ability to adapt to different situations and bounce back from challenges is highly valued in the professional world.

Application Specifics

1. Aptitude Tests:

Many graduate schemes include aptitude tests as part of their selection process. These could be numerical, verbal reasoning, or situational judgment tests.

2. Assessment Centres:

Candidates are often invited to assessment centres, where they partake in group exercises, interviews, and role-play scenarios.

Other Considerations

1. Right to Work in the UK:
