Asking probing questions about specific points can be a useful technique when you need more information or more detailed responses. Moreover, asking relevant and insightful questions also shows you are paying attention and have an interest in what is being discussed, helping to foster more positive relationships.

Effective communication is a crucial skill for fresh graduates to demonstrate, especially when entering the job market with limited professional experience. Many graduates feel they lack relevant experience, but often they possess more communication skills than they realise. It’s important not to overlook the communication skills you’ve gained through your studies, so take time to audit your degree and identify instances where you developed these skills, such as presenting research, participating in public speaking, or collaborating on group projects. Communication is essential in all jobs, even in highly technical fields like data security, where conveying complex insights to non-technical stakeholders is vital. To continue developing your communication abilities, consider taking courses, attending TED Talks, or reading books on the subject to enhance both your verbal and written skills. During interviews, craft a pitch that highlights your communication experiences and showcases your ability to clearly express ideas—this will demonstrate to employers that you can effectively engage with others and are well-prepared for any role.
