5 Branding Tips for Startups

Jul 9, 2021

In 2020 and the first quarter of 2021, entrepreneurs in the United States started over 5.6 million businesses across multiple industries. With such a high number of startups, it’s not surprising that we’re living in a startup economy. And in such an economy, it’s important to realise, like other business owners, that your company isn’t alone.

In trying to make their business unique so it stands out from the competition, many entrepreneurs get stuck because they don’t know how to go about it the right way. And this has paralysed a lot of businesses.

To help, we prepared this article to show you a few tips you can apply in crafting the perfect brand that’ll help boost your recurring income without wasting a lot of precious time, money, and energy.

So come with us if you’re ready to brand your business effectively.

5 Top Branding Tips for Startups

Understand that if you must build a business that stands out, you need to pay attention to building a solid brand identity because even though it’s easy for anyone to copy your products and services, they can’t copy your brand identity.

In the words of Rupert Murdoch, “For better or for worse, our company is a reflection of my thinking, my character, my values.”

So, begin with:

1: Knowing Yourself

Entrepreneurs who know themselves and their businesses don’t fear what the market throws their way. Entrepreneurs who understand themselves but not their business struggle in the market, and those who know neither themselves nor their business will always fail.

The best way to know yourself is to take a deeper look at your life and find out which experiences inspired and led to the creation of your business. Knowing yourself would give you a clear picture of what motivated you to start a business.

2: Knowing Your Business’s Roots

The roots of your business are one key to building a brand that stands out in the market, and you can find them by understanding your business’s vision, mission, purpose, goals, and how it intends to serve its target audience.

You’d also need to know:

  • The primary ideas driving your company
  • What makes your company and its products unique?
  • What your customers stand to gain from using your products
  • The emotions customers should experience while using your products

3: Know the Personality of your Audience

Before creating your brand, ask yourself, “Who cares?” Because by identifying who cares about your business, you’d be able to understand the needs of your target audience and how you can align your business, so it meets their needs.

For your business to succeed, it needs to stop focusing on itself and instead focus on its customers.

So make sure you take the time to survey and interview your target audience to discover who they are, what they want, what they love, how much they’re willing to spend, and what their pain points are.

4: Get a Great Brand Voice

Now that you know the roots of your business and your audience’s personality, it’s time to craft a brand voice that connects your business to its target audience.

Your brand’s voice is the persona or style your brand adopts in its communications with its audience. Getting an influential voice will set the groundwork for your brand and give you influence over how it’s perceived.

The most straightforward approach to finding your brand voice is writing every single phrase that comes to mind when you consider your company and how you want your customers to feel when you communicate with them. Look for themes like fun, quality, loyalty, excitement, and growth.

Once you’ve compiled these themes, read through them and choose three that best reflect the atmosphere you want to create for your business.

5: Get a Solid Brand Name

A great brand name is one of the most valuable tools for setting up an excellent brand for your business because it’s the first part of your business that customers interact with.

You can get a great brand name by finding words that fit your business’s tone, mission, vision, goals, and customers. But remember, avoid names that are already taken or are too similar to your competitors.

So, get a team together, and describe your company, brand roots, audience personality, and brand voice to them because it’d help your brainstorming session go faster. Encourage them to come up with the craziest and most inventive name suggestions they can.

But if you don’t have a team and coming up with the perfect name sounds complicated, then a powerful business name generator is the way to go.

Also, make sure your business has a great logo, fantastic typography, and brilliant colours that your audience can immediately connect with.

6: Finally: Test and Get Feedback

Make sure you test everything from your business’s roots to its brand name so you can be entirely sure of your brand’s effectiveness before releasing it into the market. And the best tools for testing the potency of your brand are customer interviews and surveys.

Feedback will help you know if your name makes sense to your customers, if they find it appealing, and if it stirs an emotional response from them.

Always remember that a brand built purely on assumptions has little chance of surviving in today’s market. As a result, you must test everything to make sure your ideas are perfect for your audience and market.
