3 years after graduation no job? A graduate’s story
I graduated from a top university 3 years ago. Since graduating I have done some bar work and worked in retail, but I have been unable to find anything inline with my career aspirations.
I’m not 100% sure of what career is right for me, but I want a career that will allow me to develop my skills and take on new challenges and responsibilities.
I have considered completing a Master’s degree but I’m not sure if it will be worth the investment.
What should I do?
Advice from Graduate Coach
Firstly, it is worth mentioning that you are not alone. Many people who graduated 3 years ago (or more) frequently contact us for help. This is because whilst it is a disturbing statistic 48% of graduates become underemployed and work in jobs that do not require a degree.
The graduate job market is extremely competitive and you must know what jobs are right for you and you must be able to demonstrate your employability skills at every stage of the application process.
This will involve fully understanding your self, and the skills you can bring to the table, and the demands of the job market.
Then you will need to produce high-quality job applications.
If you have not been invited to many interviews, despite sending out several applications, this is an indication that you are applying to the wrong types of jobs and/or your CV needs improving.
If you have been getting interviews but keep getting rejected afterwards, this is an indication that you need to improve your interview technique.
There’s light at the end of the tunnel
Luckily, there is hope for these graduates, who with the right guidance and support can transform their career prospects and lives.
We recently helped a bright young man who studied Geology at a top university. After completing his degree, he initially worked within the field, but quickly realised that the field was not for him.
He left that job with the hope of finding a new one. However, the job search proved to be harder than he anticipated and reached the point where he took on a retail job to earn some money whilst continuing his search.
As the weeks turned into months and the months turned into years, he grew more and more frustrated after getting rejection after rejection.
Then he was referred to us by a family member who saw one of our articles in a magazine. Once enrolled in our 6-stage one-to-one coaching programme, we audited his skills and knew he would make a perfect fit for a role in Digital Marketing.
With our help, he was able to land a job at a good Digital Marketing Agency in a Digital Ads role.
When he came to us for help, he was 3 years post-graduation. So we hope his story inspires you!
