1: Most graduates have absolutely no idea of what type of career will suit them

Many recent graduates struggle to identify the type of career that would be a good fit for their skills and interests. As a result, they often apply to a wide range of job opportunities in the hopes of finding a suitable position. However, to increase their chances of success in the competitive graduate job market, graduates must demonstrate through both their words and actions why they are the ideal candidate for a particular role.

Unfortunately, many graduates are not able to do so, which can lead to disappointment and rejection in their job search. Therefore, it is crucial for graduates to take the time to reflect on their strengths and passions, and explore various career paths before deciding on a direction to pursue.

2: The competition is fierce

Employers often receive an overwhelming number of applications for each graduate-level job opening, with some receiving up to 500 applications.

This highlights the stark reality that simply possessing a university degree is no longer enough to secure employment. Employers now seek additional accomplishments and experiences beyond a degree that demonstrate a candidate’s unique skill set and potential contribution to the organisation.

Therefore, it is crucial for graduates to pursue internships, volunteering opportunities, and other extracurricular activities that can differentiate them from the competition and provide evidence of their abilities and commitment to personal and professional growth.

3: The number of graduates entering the job market exceeds the number of jobs.

The number of graduates actively seeking employment is staggering, with approximately 800,000 graduates from the class of 2020, 1.2 million graduates from the years 2017-2019, and an additional 300,000 international students vying for positions in the job market.

As a result, the competition for jobs is incredibly fierce, with an estimated 230 graduates competing for every single job opening in 2021. This makes it extremely challenging for recent graduates to secure their first job, despite their qualifications and efforts to stand out. The reality is that graduates must be prepared to put in significant effort and persistence in their job search, while also finding ways to differentiate themselves from the vast pool of applicants.

4: Most graduates do not have enough work experience

There is a frustrating paradox that recent graduates face when seeking employment: employers often prefer to hire candidates who have prior work experience, but graduates cannot gain that experience unless they are given an opportunity to work in the first place.

This creates a challenging situation for new graduates who may feel caught in a catch-22 situation. However, it is important to note that there are ways for graduates to gain valuable experience outside of traditional employment opportunities. Internships, volunteering, and freelancing are all viable options for graduates to gain experience in their chosen fields and build their CVs.

Additionally, graduates can showcase their transferable skills and highlight relevant coursework and projects completed during their studies to demonstrate their capabilities to potential employers. It may take persistence and effort, but with the right mindset and approach, graduates can overcome this challenge and gain the necessary experience to kickstart their careers.

5: The career support offered during university is not enough

It is true that universities have historically been focused on awarding degrees to students, with less emphasis on preparing graduates for the workforce. The traditional university model and mindset have remained relatively unchanged for decades, if not centuries, which may not align with the evolving needs and demands of the modern job market.

However, graduates can still overcome these barriers by taking a proactive approach to their career development. This can involve seeking out mentorship opportunities, networking with professionals in their desired industry, and taking advantage of career development resources available through their university or other organizations. Graduates should also consider supplementing their education with practical experiences, such as internships or freelance work, to build a portfolio of work that demonstrates their skills and abilities to potential employers.

Additionally, graduates can seek out alternative education models that focus on providing job-specific skills and training, such as vocational schools, boot camps, or online courses. These programs often have more flexibility and agility to adapt to the changing demands of the job market, which can give graduates a competitive advantage in their job search. Ultimately, it is up to graduates to take ownership of their career paths and seek out opportunities to develop the skills and experiences needed to succeed in the workforce.
