Exploring the World of Off-Cycle Internships: Insights from an Undergraduate Student

What precisely is an off-cycle internship? 

Put simply, off-cycle internships are internships that take place outside of the typical summer holiday period. These internships can occur during the fall, winter, or spring, allowing students to gain valuable experience throughout the year. By participating in off-cycle internships, students can maximise their time and make the most of their academic breaks. Moreover, compared to traditional summer internships, off-cycle internships also possess several benefits that make them popular amongst university students.

In an article in Prospects, Mason delves into a pressing concern faced by many job seekers – the lack of work experience among fresh university graduates. Accordingly, off-cycle internships are very popular and common among students who are in their penultimate or final year. An off-cycle internship can be crucial as they usually serve as a part of their degree while offering invaluable work skills. In recent times, off-cycle internships have gained significant popularity across various sectors. However, why are off-cycle internships becoming so popular with employers?

Off-cycle internships: What companies get out of them

The first reason is an increased length of internship which allows these companies to tutor you in their area as much as they can as these internships serve as a way for companies to recruit students after graduation. Just like with traditional summer internships, off-cycle internships serve as a way companies can pick out well-performing interns for a possible future career. 

Off-cycle internships can last anywhere from three to twelve months, depending on the needs of the company, whereas most summer internships last two to three months. Secondly, it can be argued that companies might prefer to see interns for a longer time rather than only summer as internships are one of the main areas in which companies hire their ex-interns for a full-time job. They are also getting cheaper labour since usually they are paid at a much lower rate when compared to a full-time employee.

Benefits of internship experience: Invaluable work experience

Internships have become an essential part of the journey towards building a successful career. One of the primary reasons why internships are a must for students is the opportunity they provide to gain practical experience in a real-world work setting. Classroom learning can only take you so far, but internships allow you to apply your knowledge and skills in a professional environment. This hands-on experience not only helps you understand the practical aspects of your field but also gives you the opportunity to test and develop crucial workplace skills such as communication, teamwork, and problem-solving. 

In today’s competitive employment market, gaining hands-on knowledge through internships is becoming increasingly crucial for students. While summer internships have traditionally been the go-to option for students, many are now exploring off-cycle internships to further enhance their skill set and increase their chances of landing their dream job. In an article by Lynch, it was found that a significant number of students, approximately 9 percent, choose to utilise their gap year to gain valuable work experience. 

Benefits of internship experience: Increasing your network

Another significant advantage of internships is the chance to expand your professional network. When you embark on your internship journey, you’ll find yourself surrounded by individuals who have a wealth of knowledge and experience. These professionals can serve as mentors, offering guidance and insights that can shape your career trajectory. They have been through the ups and downs of the industry and can provide valuable advice on how to navigate the challenges that lie ahead.

Building a network can not only assist you in learning and addressing business difficulties, but it will also open doors to future chances that you would not have encountered otherwise.

Additional benefits of an off-cycle internship

We have talked about the benefits of an off-cycle internship for the companies hiring. What about the hired interns? To start with, these internships provide valuable work experience opportunities for students outside of the traditional internship seasons. Companies mostly recognise the importance of offering internships that cater to students who may not fit into the typical internship schedule.

These off-cycle internships allow students to gain practical knowledge and skills in their respective industries, even if they are not able to secure an internship during the regular recruitment cycles. For students who are looking to enhance their resumes and gain a competitive edge, off-cycle internships can be a game-changer. These internships provide a unique chance to work alongside professionals, for example in the banking sector, gaining insights into the day-to-day operations and challenges faced by financial institutions. 

Another advantage of an off-cycle internship is the increased availability of opportunities. While summer internships tend to be highly competitive, off-cycle internships often have fewer applicants, giving students a better chance of securing a position. 

Furthermore, because off-cycle internships are off-season internships, they lengthen the duration of your internship. Off-cycle internships can last longer than regular summer internships, which normally last a few months. This gives you ample time to demonstrate your abilities, learn new skills, and make a lasting impression on your supervisors. When you perform well during an off-cycle internship, you increase your chances of being offered a job after graduation. Companies often use internships as a way to identify and recruit top talent. If you consistently excel in your role and prove yourself to be a valuable asset to the organisation, they may be more inclined to extend a job offer to you once you complete your studies.

What I’ve learned and experienced from off-cycle internships

As an undergraduate, I have also applied for possible off-cycle internships in order to intern for a separate year before graduation, as I believe it is necessary to fulfil something such as an off-cycle internship or a student transfer program as an undergraduate student. Off-cycle internship applications can be difficult — I know from personal experience — but they are to be expected of any student, especially for one without relevant work experience.  Suppose you have the perseverance and the willpower to keep up with the never-ending interviews and assessments they offer. In that case, the appropriate internship for you will undoubtedly arise after applying to numerous openings. 

In my experience applying to financial institutions like NatWest and Deutsche Bank, I’ve noticed that they typically employ evaluations in addition to interviews before making their ultimate choice. I have been subjected to tests in which I was required to select the “least” and “most” appropriate actions to take in certain work-related situations. When faced with the opportunity to pursue an off-cycle internship, I found myself torn between continuing with my final year or seizing this chance to gain valuable experience. 

Finally, I decided to prioritise my studies because I wanted to attempt an off-cycle internship after graduation that would benefit both me and my interests, as doing anything that is not my passion could jeopardise my performance at the internship. However, if you find yourself in a similar situation and are eligible for an off-cycle internship, I strongly encourage you to go for it especially if it is in a sector you are very much interested in. This unique opportunity can provide you with a competitive edge over other job seekers in the future.

My final thoughts

I would like to point out the fact that while off-season internships are often easier to get due to less competition, you should be aware that the positions are also limited compared to the regular summer internships. There is also the potential that you will have a greater workload. Consider this a learning opportunity, but be aware of your limits when doing this alongside university work. I would recommend an off-cycle internship if you:

  • Believe you can handle a large workload
  • Are ok with getting paid less than a regular full-time employee
  • Have not been accepted into a regular summer internship
  • Are searching for an internship that lasts longer than three months
  • Cannot do a regular summer internship for whatever reason=

To summarise, every undergraduate student should participate in an off-cycle internship at some point throughout the course of their studies. This is especially important considering how challenging it is to enter the workforce without having prior experience in the relevant field. This can be challenging for an undergraduate to accomplish, taking into account the amount of work they have to do during the busy academic year. However, this sacrifice is well worth it because not only may you credit internship hours toward certain graduation requirements, but you can also get some practice with the process of applying for jobs and obtain real-world experience in the sector that you are interested in.
