How We Helped an Indian International Student to Get a Data Science Job in the UK

Jun 17, 2023

We coached a determined young man called Vihaan from India. He had a burning passion for technology and had pursued a Master’s in AI and Data Analytics at Queen Mary College, a prestigious institution under the University of London. He believed his degree would open countless doors for him in the professional world, but he soon realised that the journey to success was more complex than he had imagined.

Faced with the stark reality that his skill set was not aligned with the roles he aspired to in the United Kingdom, he found himself at a crossroads. After reading our web pages dedicated to international students and graduates, and their success stories, he reached out to us here at Graduate Coach. Our expert career coaches immediately recognised that his CV was not fit for the roles he desired, and his job search needed a transformation.

How Graduate Coach Helped Him

Our team worked diligently, coaching him through the process of revamping his CV, optimising his LinkedIn profile, and honing his interview skills. As graduation day approached, He possessed a fully ATS-compliant CV, yet the interview invitations remained elusive. We were initially perplexed because AI and data science roles were in high demand in the UK, and his skills should have garnered the attention of recruiters.

Determined to uncover the root cause of his struggles, we sought the advice of a recruiter friend who was experienced in hiring for similar roles. The recruiter swiftly identified the problem – his LinkedIn profile stated that he was “open to work,” a common practice among graduates. However, unbeknownst to us, this actually worked against him, as LinkedIn algorithms penalised graduates with such a status. The solution was simple yet profound. Vihaan updated his profile, and recruiters began reaching out to him within a day.

How we gave Vihaan practical and relevant work experience

Inspired by Vihaan’s unwavering dedication and his thirst for practical experience, we provided him with an opportunity to bridge the gap between theory and application. We enrolled him in our digital internship program, bestowing upon him the title of Data Science Intern. While juggling his Master’s coursework, Vihaan spent two days a week working with the team here at Graduate Coach.

Vihaan’s passion and expertise shone through as he collaborated with the team to create a new analytics course to help other students and graduates. He became an indispensable asset, using his skills in machine learning to analyse and interpret our Google Analytics data. With the insights he gained, he helped us to make strategic decisions. He also created a visual dashboard for us, to centralise our site’s performance metrics.

Vihaan’s Success Story

With our guidance and support, Vihaan successfully applied for a position with the largest insurance company in the UK. Additionally, we helped him to navigate the nuances of the company’s culture, ensuring a smooth transition into his new role.

During the application process, Vihaan was assigned a task that showcased his data analysis prowess. He delved into the vast sea of customer data within Google Analytics, studying patterns and trends from the past three months. With his programming skills, Vihaan developed a remarkable algorithm that separated serious leads from casual site browsers. Given that the insurance company’s website received a staggering 2.3 million unique visitors monthly, his recommendations were implemented across Europe, revolutionising their targeting strategies.

Vihaan’s journey from a struggling graduate to a highly sought-after data scientist serves as a testament to the power of resilience, adaptability, and expert career coaching. His story inspires countless other graduates especially other international students from India who wish to work in the UK after graduation.

Our expert coaching transformed Vihaan’s career prospects
