Jun 25, 2023

Studying in the United Kingdom offers international students a wealth of opportunities for personal growth, academic excellence, and cultural exposure. However, adapting to a new country and educational system can be challenging. To help you to make the most of your experience as an Indian student in the UK, we have compiled a list of essential tips. From navigating cultural differences to ensuring academic success, these recommendations will help you thrive during your time in the UK.

Familiarise Yourself with the UK Education System

The UK education system may differ from what you are accustomed to in India. Take the time to familiarise yourself with the structure, grading system, and teaching methods:

  • Attend orientation sessions offered by your university
  • Seek guidance from academic advisors
  • Make use of online resources to understand the expectations and requirements of your courses
  • Read your module guides very carefully to see how you will be assessed

This understanding will contribute to your academic success in the UK.

Consider Getting a Career Coach

Navigating the job market in the UK can be extremely challenging, particularly for international students. Consider seeking guidance from a career coach who can help you identify your strengths, explore career options, and provide valuable insights into the UK job market. A career coach can assist you in developing your graduate CV, preparing for interviews, and networking effectively.

If you are an Indian student or graduate who is hoping to get a graduate job in the UK after your studies, getting a career coach that specialises in helping students/grads will give you a competitive edge.

Here at Graduate Coach, we have helped several international students from India to get good graduate jobs in the UK.

International students oftentimes struggle to get a job in the UK after their undergraduate or postgraduate studies due to one or more of the following reasons:

  • They did not get adequate support from their university career services
  • They do not have any work experience
  • Their job application technique is not optimal
  • They are having issues related to their graduate Visa

Find out more about why international students and graduates struggle to get jobs in the UK.

Network and Build Connections

Networking plays a crucial role in career development. Attend career fairs, industry events, and networking sessions to connect with professionals in your field of interest. Join professional associations or student societies related to your area of study. Building connections will not only enhance your job prospects but also provide you with valuable insights and potential mentors.

Take Advantage of Support Services

Universities in the UK offer a wide range of support services to help students succeed. Familiarise yourself with the resources available, such as academic support centres, libraries, career services, and mental health counselling. Seek assistance whenever needed, whether it’s for academic queries or personal challenges. Remember, there are professionals available to support you throughout your academic journey and your time as an international student studying in the UK.

Locate Indian Grocery Stores and Restaurants

The UK is a very diverse place to live and study. Therefore, you should be able to buy many of the Indian foods that you enjoy at home. Most large chain supermarkets such as Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Asda will have World Foods aisles. These aisles are stocked with foods such as paneer, ghee, lentils, chapattis, Dosa batter and more! You’ll also find plenty of Indian-inspired ready meals such as chicken tikka masala, samosas, saag aloo and more.

You may also want to check out Indian grocery stores for fresh fruits and vegetables such as okra, bitter gourd, brinjal, Alphonso mangoes and Guwar beans. Indian grocery stores are often concentrated around areas with a significant Indian population. Look for towns known for their Indian community, such as Southall in London, Manchester’s Curry Mile, or Leicester’s Golden Mile. These areas are likely to have a range of Indian grocery stores catering to various regional cuisines.

Indian students often crave authentic Indian food while studying abroad. Fortunately, the UK has a diverse culinary scene with numerous Indian restaurants and takeaways. Explore local Indian eateries to savour familiar dishes and indulge in the flavours of home.

Embrace Cultural Diversity

The United Kingdom is a multicultural country with diverse communities, beliefs, and customs.

Embracing cultural diversity will enrich your experience and help you develop a broader perspective. You will meet plenty of other international and home students from various parts of India. Be sure to also engage with people from various backgrounds, participate in cultural events, and explore different cuisines. By doing so, you will not only make lifelong friends but also broaden your horizons.

Engage in Extracurricular Activities

Participating in extracurricular activities will not only enrich your university experience but also enhance your personal and professional growth. Join clubs, societies, or sports teams that align with your interests. Engaging in extracurricular activities will help you make new friends, develop leadership skills, and build a well-rounded profile for your future career. If you find yourself missing home, consider joining the Indian society at your university. There you’ll join a community of people to embrace your culture with especially during celebrations such as Diwali and Holi. and sporting events such as watching cricket.

Stay Connected with Family and Friends in India

Maintaining relationships with family and friends back in India is crucial for emotional support and avoiding homesickness. Use video calling apps or social media platforms to regularly connect with your loved ones. Sharing your experiences, challenges, and triumphs with them will provide encouragement and help you stay connected to your support network.

Summary

Studying in the UK as an Indian student is a rewarding and transformative experience. By embracing cultural diversity, familiarising yourself with the education system, and taking advantage of support services, you can make the most of your time in the UK. Developing time management skills, engaging in extracurricular activities, and considering a career coach will further enhance your academic and professional journey.
