Tips for Canadian International Students Studying in the UK

Jul 7, 2023

In the academic year 2021/2022, 7,485 Canadian international students came to the UK to study. The UK offers a rich cultural heritage and prestigious educational institutions. However, adjusting to life in Britain and a different academic system can present some challenges. In this blog post, we will provide valuable tips and advice to help Canadian international students make the most of their time studying in the UK.

1: Understand the UK Education System

Take the time to familiarise yourself with the UK education system, which may differ from what you’re accustomed to in Canada. Understand the grading system, course structure, and assessment methods. Seek guidance from your university’s academic advisors to ensure you have a clear understanding of the expectations and requirements for your course.

Undergraduate degrees typically last three years in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, while in Scotland, they usually last four years. Postgraduate taught degrees, such as Master’s programs, generally take one year to complete. Postgraduate research degrees, such as PhD programs, can take three to five years.

The UK uses a percentage-based grading system for undergraduate degrees. Commonly, undergraduate grades are classified as First Class Honors (70%+), Upper Second Class Honors (60-69%), Lower Second Class Honors (50-59%), Third Class Honors (40-49%), or Fail (below 40%).

2: Locate and Access Canadian Foods in the UK

As an international Canadian student in the UK, you may wish to purchase some of your favourite Canadian treats.

Shipping Canadian foods to the UK can get quite expensive. Luckily you’ll be able to source many items here in the UK.

The following online stores carry Canadian goodies:

  • Super Singh’s Canadian Things offer many Canadian foods including Canadian groceries, drinks and household items.
  • American Fizz sells Canadian confectionery such as Twizzlers gummies, Jell-O candy squares, Ginger Delights, Coffee Crisp, StarBar and more.

Tim Hortons

Poutine

There are a few places in the UK where you can get your fix of squeaky cheese, gravy and fries! For example, La Poutine is owned by a French Canadian and his British-Canadian wife.

3: Network and connect with other Canadian students

Building a network of fellow Canadians and international students will help you feel more at home and provide a support system during your time in the UK.

Seek out Canadian or international student societies on campus. Universities such as UCL and Oxford have a Canadian society that hosts several Canadian-themed events during the academic year such as a Thanksgiving dinner, group trips to poutine restaurants and days out to watch or participate in Canadian sports.

4: Use University Support Services:

UK universities offer comprehensive support services for international students. Take advantage of resources such as orientation programs, academic advisors and career services. The international student advisors will also be able to connect you with other international and Canadian students.

These services are designed to help you succeed academically and provide guidance in various aspects of student life, ensuring a smooth transition and a positive educational experience.

Don’t struggle in silence! There’s plenty of support and guidance available to you throughout your studies and beyond as an alumnus.
