#1: Bank of England

The graduate development programme at the Bank of England is a generalist scheme, open to graduates from any degree discipline. 

Key Info: 

Academic entry requirements: 2:1 degree
Duration: 2 years and 3 months
Salary: £30,000

Depending on your degree, you could work in supervision, technology, data, risk or economics

#2: Civil Service 

If you are interested in securing a place on a public sector graduate scheme, you might like to consider the Civil Service Fast Stream. 

There are 15 streams to choose from, from commercial to property. Depending on the scheme, you will need a 2:2 or a 2:1 undergraduate degree. The Fast Stream offers competitive starting salaries of £27,000 or £28,000.

#3: Frontline

Half a million children in England don’t have a safe or stable home. Frontline recruits and develops grads to be social workers and transform the lives of the most vulnerable children and families. 

Frontline is a public sector graduate scheme that is designed to help graduates to develop the skills required to help the most disadvantaged in society.

#4: GCHQ

GCHQ is Britain’s signals intelligence agency. It plays a major role in protecting the country against everything from terrorism to cyber-attacks. 

GCHQ offers a leadership development scheme. On the programme, you’ll develop your skills and competencies, gaining experience and knowledge of our work through a series of challenging business placements.

#5: MI5

MI5 helps to protect the UK against national security threats such as espionage. It investigates suspects and organisations to gain intelligence relating to security threats. 

Key information: 

  • Starting salary: £30,000
  • Continuous training and development 

They offer 4 programmes:

  1. Intelligence officer development programme
  2. Intelligence and data analyst development programme
  3. Technology graduate development programme 
  4. Business enablers

#6: NHS

The NHS is an organisation like no other. It is Europe’s largest employer with an annual budget of £100 billion+. 

The NHS Graduate Management Training Scheme is designed to train you to become a senior manager in healthcare. This is a good option if you would like a managerial role as a graduate.

You can apply for a graduate scheme opportunity in one of these 6 areas: 

  • General management
  • Finance
  • Human resources
  • Health informatics
  • Policy and strategy
  • Health analysis

#7: Police Now

Police Now offers a National Graduate Leadership Programme. This public sector graduate scheme gives graduates the opportunity to help with breaking the intergenerational cycle of crime in the most challenged areas of the country by creating safe communities where people can thrive.

They offer the following programmes:

  • National Graduate Leadership Programme
  • National Detective Programme

#8: Teach First  

Teach First is a charity on a mission to deliver a fair education to all. They do this by developing inspirational teachers and leaders. 

On the Teach, First training programme candidates will complete their PGCE. In order to be accepted onto the programme, you must have or be expecting to achieve a 2:1 degree. 

The application process involves submitting an online application followed by attending a selection day. The selection day will involve being interviewed, taking part in a group task and teaching people.

#9: Think Ahead

Think ahead is another popular public sector graduate scheme for grads who are passionate about driving change. 

In the first year of the programme, candidates work towards getting a post-graduate diploma in social work. In your second year, candidates earn a Master’s in social work awarded by Middlesex University and work as a qualified social worker.

#10: Unlocked 

 Unlocked is a 2-year leadership programme that enables graduates to contribute to the prison reform. 

As part of the programme, you will be fully funded and supported to complete a Master’s degree. 

In the second year, you will get the opportunity to complete a placement at an organisation such as KPMG, Google, Clifford Chance or  PA consulting.

Starting salary: c. £30,000
