The Leadership Skills That Can Help You Pave Your Future Career

Jun 7, 2024

When you’re thinking about building the path towards your future career, you should think not just about your first job, nor the job that comes before that, but the kind of position that you want to be in five years, ten years, or even twenty years down the line. If you want to climb the career ladder into positions of prominence, power, and lucrative compensation, then becoming a leader is the way to do it. However, when we talk about developing “leadership skills,” what do we really mean, and how do you really do it?

Clear, confident communication

Effective communication is not only about being able to speak and write clearly and authoritatively on things that you know (though that certainly is important.) Being able to speak with emotional intelligence and a comprehensive scope of the different viewpoints you have to be able to consider is just as vital. As such, active listening is just as important a part of communication, and leadership, as speaking out is. Confidence in communication doesn’t mean having to know all the answers, of course, it also means being able to cede space to voices that fill in the gaps.

Decision-making

If you’re going to become a leader, then you need to enhance your ability to make informed and timely decisions by evaluating information critically, considering potential consequences, and seeking input from diverse perspectives. Often, the only way to do this is to put yourself in positions where you have to make decisions. For instance, volunteering for leadership positions, both inside and outside of work, and putting yourself in that hot seat can help. Adaptability and the flexibility to adjust your strategies and approaches in response to changing circumstances are important, too.

Coaching

As a leader, you are going to be the head of the team that looks to you to set the direction. You are likely to work with those who have excellent skills and viewpoints to bring to the table, but who aren’t able to bring out their full potential. Training as a coach and mentor can help you develop the skills to further train and hone your team to ensure that you’re helping them excel. Being the leader isn’t about being the best in the team, but being able to bring the best out of them

Strategic thinking

You have to enhance your ability to set a clear vision for the future and devise strategies to achieve long-term goals, inspiring and guiding your team toward a shared purpose. A big part of this is learning how to delegate, to entrust tasks to others effectively. You want to delegate in a way that ensures you’re pairing the right skills with the right tasks, but also in a way that empowers your team to step up to the challenge and further build themselves, too.

Conclusion

\You should begin to build your leadership skills right now. Get used to taking the reins, to showing decisiveness, and being responsible. Leaders get put into leadership positions. You don’t get put into a leadership decision to become a leader.
