How to Support Your Child as They Prepare for University Over the Summer

Aug 5, 2024

The transition to university is a significant milestone in your child’s life. As they prepare to embark on this new journey, your support and guidance can make a world of difference.

The summer before university is an ideal time to help them get organised, build essential skills, and feel confident about the road ahead.

This guide provides practical, actionable advice to ensure your child is ready to excel academically, boost their employability, and smoothly transition to campus life.

Help with Packing

Start by helping them with their packing list.

Sit down together and make a list of all the essentials they will need.

Think about bedding, kitchenware, study supplies, and personal items.

Go shopping together to ensure they have everything they need. This can also be a great bonding experience before they move away.

Financial Planning

Financial planning is another important area where you can provide support.

Discuss budgeting and help them create a financial plan.

Talk about managing expenses like rent, food, books, and social activities.

Show them how to track their spending and save money. This will give them a good foundation for managing their finances independently.

Getting Organised

Encourage your child to get organised. Help them plan their room layout and think about how they want to arrange their space.

This can make moving in less stressful and more enjoyable.

Ensure they have a system for keeping their important documents safe and accessible. These include their ID and medical records.

Check if they need any vaccinations before going to university – encourage them to get a check-up at the GP and dentist.

Emotional Support

Supporting your child’s emotional well-being is just as important.

Talk to them about their feelings and concerns regarding this new chapter.

Offer reassurance and let them know you are there for them. Encourage them to stay connected with friends and family to maintain a support network.

Make them aware of the vast amount of support provided at university such as academic support.

Familiarise with the New Area

If your child is moving to a new city, help them get familiar with the area.

Research the location together to find out where the nearest supermarkets, pharmacies and other essential services are.

This can help them feel more at ease in their new environment.

Academic Preparation

Encourage your child to start preparing academically.

Help them get their reading lists and suggest they start reading. Note, that they may not need to purchase all their textbooks as they may be available at the LRC at their university.

Discuss the importance of good study habits and time management.

They can practice these skills over the summer to be ready when classes start.

Gaining Work Experience

Encourage your child to get a summer job.

This provides valuable work experience and helps build their CV. It also instils a sense of responsibility and time management.

Discuss the benefits of finding a part-time job while at university. This not only provides extra income but also enhances their employability. Emphasise the importance of building their CV to maximise their chances of securing a good job after graduation.

Employers value candidates with a diverse set of skills and experiences, so every job counts.

Building a Resume

Support your child in building their resume. Discuss the benefits of gaining work experience through internships, part-time jobs, or volunteer work.

Help them find opportunities that align with their field of study. This can boost their employability and provide valuable experience.

Learning New Skills

Finally, encourage your child to learn new skills. Suggest they take online courses in areas like coding, graphic design, or a new language.

These skills can be very attractive to future employers and provide a competitive edge.

Conclusion

As a parent, your support and guidance are invaluable during this transition. By helping your child prepare for university, you are setting them up for success.

Enjoy this time together and take pride in the exciting journey that lies ahead.
