How To Make You More Employable As A Graduate

Aug 19, 2024

When you graduate, you’re thrust into the adult world and sometimes, it can feel a little overwhelming. You’re faced with the prospect of having to find a job and start the career you’ve been working towards throughout your education.

Making yourself more employable as a graduate is important because you’re up against a lot of individuals, all of whom are likely to have been employed prior and have more experience working than you.

However, it’s not impossible to get a job quickly as a graduate – you just need to know how to make yourself more employable. With that being said, here are some helpful tips to make you more employable as a graduate this year.

Take online courses

Online courses are great to take when it comes to being a graduate. Sure, you might not want to go back into education so soon but if you’re looking to add on to your current knowledge and skillset, online courses can be a good half-step towards achieving the skills and experience necessary to secure a job interview.

Even though you might not have a lot of experience, if any when it comes to having a job, what you have on your CV is important too. For example, if you’ve done a course that’s respected within the industry you’re heading into, then this might give you the sway you need to get yourself into that interview room.

Online courses are affordable and accessible. Prior to the Internet, taking a course might not have been something that was possible due to time restraints and other commitments that would get in the way of attending in-person courses.

Grow your professional circle through networking

Growing your professional circle is something that you should be doing when it comes to getting yourself opportunities within the careers world.

Networking is a great activity to do when it comes to building your career path and making you more employable as a graduate. As a graduate, you might not have the knowledge of people who operate in the industry you want to get into. Therefore, attending networking events is extremely beneficial to explore and sign yourself up for.

There are plenty of networking events that will be available in your local area and online. Some will be free, whereas others might be paid entry. Therefore, it’s good to assess the benefits of these networking events and prioritise the ones that you feel might help you the most.

Improve any skills or knowledge you’re lacking in

The more skills and knowledge you have for the role itself, the more likely you’ll get the green tick from the recruitment team.

As a graduate, your skills and knowledge might be somewhat limited, which is why you should be looking to improve these where you can. There are a variety of ways in which you can improve both your skills and knowledge. The online world is a huge resource of information that can help you fill in the gaps when it comes to the knowledge you have.

Skills-wise, there are also plenty of opportunities through volunteer work, as well as paid experiences that will help you build those all-important skills that you need.

Develop your CV

Your CV is probably the most important part of your process when trying to get a job as a graduate. When you’re a graduate, you don’t have a huge amount to put on your CV, which is why you want to be as detailed as possible and gain as much knowledge, skills and experience before applying for the jobs you’re after.

When developing your CV, it’s good to speak to those who have knowledge of the career path that you’re looking to go down.

That’s why you should be getting your CV seen by those in the know. They might be able to offer some tidbits when it comes to creating a CV that will hopefully land in the yes pile of the recruitment team responsible for hiring the roles you’re after.

Learn a new language and neutralise your accent

As a graduate, the more feathers you can add to your bow, the better. That also includes unique talents, like learning a new language. You could even look to neutralise your accent through online courses.

Neutralising your accent might make you more understandable to people who would otherwise struggle. Some accents, whether here in the UK or across the world, might have qualities that make them more difficult to follow.

Learning a new language can be helpful when you’re looking to put yourself above the rest of the candidates applying for the job. For some roles, having an additional language might be beneficial.

Have a positive attitude and be productive

Graduates need to have a can-do attitude. Being fresh out of education should mean you’re ready to start working and many employers will look for this fresh, spunky attitude over those who might not care so much for the hard work later on in life.

During your education, you might have had to be productive and organised with your efforts to get projects in on time, which all come in handy in the real world. If you want that job on offer, then having a positive attitude and being productive in your application journey is essential.

Do your research ahead of job interviews

Finally, take a good look at what’s required from the job interview when you get the brief through. Not only should you prepare for an interview environment but you should also be mindful of the company you’re looking to work for.

The more you can learn about the company, the better. That’s why it’s useful to have a cheat sheet of information that you can refer to before entering the interview itself.

Even though you might be a graduate, you have just as much opportunity and potential to secure an interview. Use these tips to make yourself more employable for any job or company you’re looking to work for this year or in the not-so-distant future.
