Career Coaching Insights for the Holiday Season

Dec 12, 2023

Ah, winter! A time of cosy firesides, sparkling lights, and… job hunting? For many, the festive season might seem like an odd time to delve into the job market. Yet, beneath the surface, the job market during the holidays can be a winter wonderland of unique opportunities. Let’s explore how you can navigate this season with career coaching insights tailored for the holidays.

Why the Holidays Can Be a Hidden Gem for Job Seekers

  1. Less Competition: With many potential job seekers taking a break for the holidays, there’s a reduced pool of applicants, allowing your application to stand out. This gets around the problem many graduates face when searching for their first graduate job, with far too many graduates going for far too few job openings.
  2. Year-end Budget Adjustments: Some companies may be hiring to use up their budget allocations for the year or preparing for a fresh start in the new year.
  3. Networking Galore: With an abundance of holiday parties and gatherings, the festive season is ripe for expanding your professional network. This will help you increase your chances of getting employed as employers are more likely to hire someone they have already talked to than a complete stranger they’ve only spoken to during interviews.

Career Coaching Tips for the Holiday Job Search

1. Revise and Shine Your CV

Just as winter calls for a wardrobe refresh, your CV might need some sprucing up. Ensure it reflects your latest accomplishments and is tailored for the specific roles you’re eyeing.

When you are writing your CV, you need to make sure that you emphasis the key employability skills that are directly relevant to your job. An example of this is highlighting your skills and experience with IT for a job where you have to use coding or even complex software. You should double check your CV against every job specification, and optimise it for that specific role before you submit you application to increase your chances of getting an interview.

2. Seasonal Volunteering Opportunities

Many organisations look for volunteers during the festive season. This not only spreads cheer but can also bolster your CV, showcasing your commitment and varied skills.

By volunteering, you will gain experiences that you can discuss during interviews, demonstrating that you can solve problems and have experience using your employability skills, such as teamwork and leadership in a practical setting.

You can also find temporary employment over the holidays, such as in retail, due to the increase in demand. This has the same advantages as volunteering while earning some money at the same time.

3. Set Clear Intentions

While the festive season can offer opportunities, it’s essential to set clear goals. Whether it’s sending out a certain number of applications, attending networking events, or acquiring a new skill, having a focus will guide your efforts.

While you are applying for jobs, make sure you are applying for the same kind of roles each time, even if the job title is not exactly the same. This makes it easier to tailor your CV as the skills employers will be looking for will be similar, meaning you only have to make small changes to your CV for each application.

You should also avoid apply for temporary jobs, as well as permanent roles at the same time, as this split focus will make it harder for you to get employed in either role.

4. Practice Patience

With holidays and end-of-year vacations, response times might be slower than usual. Use this time for self-reflection, skill development, or even just recharging your batteries.

You can use this time to perform a skill audit, taking note of the types of skills employers are looking for and making sure you emphasise how you have displayed those skills previously. This will make your CV stand out, especially among the lower quantity of applications expected during this time of year. You can also practice doing interviews, rehearsing answers to commonly asked questions and incorperating feedback from previous interviews.

5. Leverage Holiday Networking

Be ready with your elevator pitch, even at more casual holiday gatherings. You never know who you might run into. Remember to keep it light, friendly, and in the spirit of the season.

You should take every opportunity to network with people who work in the industry you want to work in. This is because recruiters are far more likely to hire someone they know than a complete stranger. Even if there are no opportunities available at their company at the moment, they can help point you in the right direction, or even let one of their own contacts know about you.

6. Seasonal Self-care

Amidst the hustle and bustle of both the holidays and job searching, don’t forget to take care of yourself. Allocate time for relaxation and activities you love. Research shows that a relaxed and well-rested mind is often more receptive and creative, essential traits for a successful job hunt.

You will struggle during interviews and while sending out applications if you do not take time for breaks and to relax, as you will be slower to respond to questions and slower to recall pre-prepared answers to questions about your past experiences, as well as being more likely to make errors while applying for jobs.

To avoid this, ensure that you get enough sleep during the night, and take regular breaks between sending out applications and skills audits. This has the added benefit of increasing the chance of you spotting your own mistakes as you come back to your work with a fresh mind.

Conclusion

The winter job market, much like the season itself, has its unique charm and challenges. With the right strategies and a sprinkle of festive spirit, you can navigate this winter wonderland effectively. As the snowflakes fall and you sip on your hot chocolate, remember that the perfect job opportunity might just be around the corner, wrapped in a bow of holiday serendipity.
