Jun 30, 2024

Graduation ceremonies are significant events. The typical duration is between 1-2 hours. But can you leave the graduation ceremony early? You might be wondering this if you have other plans on the day of your graduation ceremony.

Here’s why you should not leave your graduation ceremony early unless there is an emergency.

Understanding Graduation Ceremony Etiquette

Importance of Staying Until the End

Staying until the end of the graduation ceremony shows respect for your peers and educators. It’s also a traditional practice, honouring the significance of the event and the collective effort that brought everyone to this milestone.

Why It’s Considered Rude to Leave Early

Leaving early disrupts the ceremony and distracts others. Additionally, it may be perceived as disrespectful to those still waiting for their moment. You began this journey as a cohort, it is courteous to witness your peer group as they graduate.

Guidelines on Leaving Early

What if you need to leave due to an emergency?

You should only leave early if there is an emergency, such as feeling unwell or receiving urgent news that requires your immediate attention. In such cases, it’s important to exit quietly and discreetly to minimise disruption. Alert a member of staff so they can assist you in leaving with minimal disturbance to the ongoing ceremony. If there are no emergencies, you should wait until the end of the ceremony. Specifically, you may leave once the Chancellor and Official Party have exited the auditorium, signalling the formal conclusion of the event. This ensures that you show respect for the ceremony and your cohort.

Potential Consequences of Leaving Early

Social Implications

  • Peer Perception: Peers may view leaving early as disrespectful.
  • Educator Relationships: It could strain relationships with former educators.

Missed Experiences

  • Memorable Moments: You might miss significant parts of the ceremony.
  • Photo Opportunities: You could miss group photos after the ceremony has ended

How to Manage Long Ceremonies

To stay engaged during the graduation ceremony, focus on speeches and presentations by practising active listening. Show your support by clapping for your peers as they walk across the stage, where appropriate, which helps create a positive atmosphere.

What if you have other plans?

If you have other plans clashing with your graduation ceremony, speak with your university about deferring your ceremony or attending another ceremony. If you have other plans after the graduation ceremony has ended, you may opt not to attend the post-ceremony reception.

Conclusion

Can you leave the graduation ceremony early? No, It’s best to stay until the end out of respect for your peers and educators. Leaving early is generally discouraged unless it’s an emergency. If you were to leave in the middle of the ceremony, you could cause disruption and disturbance to the guests and the ongoing ceremony.
